Cholesterol & Atrial Fibrillation

Submitted by: Suzy Walsh, BNHM

Client: 59-year-old male

Initial presentation: Client presented with atrial fibrillation and slightly elevated cholesterol.  He had a warm constitution, was physically active and generally fit, with moderate visceral fat and a tendency towards constipation.  The client was also trying to reduce his alcohol consumption.

Medications: Diltiazem, Rosuvastatin and Aspirin

Herbal formula

Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn berry) 1:2 - 40ml
Momordica charantia (Bitter Melon fruit) 1:2 - 40ml
Cynara scolymus (Globe Artichoke leaf) 1:2 – 20ml

Dosage: 5ml three times a day with food.

Additional recommendations: Herbs were used to support cardiovascular health, the liver, cholesterol levels and to support a reduction in visceral fat.

Continue with the regular exercise and active lifestyle.  Lean towards a Mediterranean dietary approach increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates.  Reduce alcohol consumption to no more than 2 drinks a day, with at least two alcohol free days per week.

Follow up: A week after taking the formula, the client reported that his heart felt “stronger” and that his general wellbeing had improved.  His appetite had reduced from the first few doses of the formula and that his bowel movements were more regular.
